Thousands of gallons of gas given away for free at Norwood gas station
In less than two hours on Friday, 7,000 gallons of free gasoline were given away at a Norwood gas station thanks to a Massachusetts businessman. Drivers started lining up early Friday at the parking lot near the Rojo Irving Gas Station on Route 1, hours ahead of the beginning of the promotion that began at 6:40 a.m. — 20 minutes earlier than planned.Businessman Ernie Boch Jr. originally said he was giving away 7,000 gallons of gas in a giveaway he called “April Fuels,” but he later increased the amount at least twice.”I was filing a friend of mine’s car up, and the numbers went to $107 — $107 to fill a car, and that is insane. So I started thinking, and gas is going up. It always goes up in the spring and the summer, and I said, ‘Well, I think I should do something,’ and here we are April Fuels Day,” Boch said.In all, about 500 motorists pumped about 7,050 gallons of free gas which was worth about $30,000. Several motorists started camping out in the area Thursday night. “I am retired, and there is nothing else to do, so I came out to get some free gas,” motorist Marty Scopa said.“I actually heard about it last night, and I was shocked. I live in Medfield, so I decided to come down, so I came here at about 10 p.m., and here I am still,” motorist Patrick Haines said. Many motorists pulled up to the station with a nearly-empty tank to get the most bag for Boch’s buck, including Eric MacDonald, who ran out of gas while in line.”I had three gallons in my car, so I figured, ‘OK, I’ll take advantage of this,’ and I ran right out,” MacDonald said.Boch paid for a police detail, and a traffic plan was in place, but not everybody was thrilled about the festivities.”It just created such a havoc in the neighborhood,” resident Colin Murray said. Murray’s granddaughter couldn’t go to day care because of the traffic jam on Washington Street.”I thought there was going to be fisticuffs,” Murray said. “One person came out and was going the wrong way at a tremendous speed. I thought there would be a head-on (crash). It was just crazy,” Murray said.
