Boston inspectors shut down illegal housing allegedly used by airline employees

The city of Boston Inspectional Services has issued an order to shut down what it said was a garage transformed into a multi-bedroom unit slated to house at least a dozen people in East Boston.

“This unit was constructed illegally, stored hazardous material, was missing smoke detectors and had no second means of egress,” the department wrote on social media.

The department said its investigative and enforcement team responded to an anonymous complaint of an illegal unit on Geneva Street in East Boston.

Inspectors said the housing was used by flight attendants coming into Logan Airport, who rented the location for a day or two during their layover.

When inspectors arrived they found four bedrooms, two bathrooms and 20 bunkbeds, along with missing smoke detectors, no second exit and flammable materials such as a container of gasoline stored inside.

The Inspectional Services Department said it believes they paid approximately $300 a month.
